The Meesha Shafi Case

In 2018, fellow Pakistani singer Meesha Shafi publicly accused Ali Zafar of sexual harassment, in what became one of Pakistan’s most widely covered #MeToo-era cases. Zafar denied the allegations and filed a defamation suit against Shafi, seeking Rs 1 billion in damages.

The case spanned nearly eight years in court, involving 283 hearings, nine different judges, and testimony from 20 witnesses. On March 31, 2026, a Lahore sessions court ruled in Zafar’s favor. According to court records reported by Pakistani and international news outlets, the judge found insufficient evidence to support Shafi’s allegations, ordered her to pay Zafar Rs 5 million in damages, and issued a permanent order restraining her from repeating the allegations on any platform.

Shafi has appealed the ruling. In May 2026, the Lahore High Court partially suspended the damages portion of the verdict pending that appeal, while keeping the restriction on repeating the allegations in place. News coverage of the verdict has described public reaction in Pakistan as sharply divided.
