Early Life and Education

Sonya was born on July 15, 1991, in Karachi, into a Sindhi family; her father works in construction business. She completed her education at the University of Karachi.

Family

Sonya comes from a non-artistic household. She has a younger sister, Sana Hussain. Sonya was previously married to Wasif Muhammad in a private ceremony; the marriage later ended, and she is currently unmarried, having spoken publicly about prioritizing her career, mental health, and personal growth.

Career

Sonya made her acting debut in 2011 with a supporting role in “Dareecha.” She went on to lead roles in “Marasim” (2014) and “Nikah” (2015), followed by the acclaimed “Aisi Hai Tanhai” (2017), which earned her two Lux Style Award nominations for her role as Pakeeza Islam.

She made her film debut in Jami’s psychological thriller “Moor” (2015), playing Amber, which earned her an ARY Film Award for Best Actor Female. She went on to lead roles in the films “Azaadi” (2018), “Tich Button” (2022), and “Sorry: A Love Story” (2023), and continued her television career with “Tinkay Ka Sahara” (2022) and “Saraab.”

Awards and Recognition

Sonya was presented with the Icon Award by then-Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in August 2023. In 2025, she won the Eurasian Open Award “Diamond Butterfly” for Best Actor for her role in “Deemak.”
